Luccas Martins Trupe
The quartet led by Luccas Martins (compositions and percussion) results from the mixture of sounds from the rhythmic and percussive Afro-Brazilian scene and the soft melodies of cool jazz. What we hear are maracatu, ijexá, barravento with simple themes played mostly by trumpet with a plunger mute, while the harmonic part is divided between the vibraphone and the accordion. Note that the whole creative process starts from the percussive experience of the composer, who includes in his setup not only the typical instruments of the drum kit, but also those with their own distinct sounds: the handpan, the cuíca and the talking drum.
Original Instrumental Compositions
When performing solo, Luccas shares with the public his experiences studying the handpan or hang drum, as it is also called. He presents the instrument to the public and shows it in context encompassing several rhythms including jazz and also traditional Brazilian folk music.

Serelepe
Forró
Serelepe is based on the Northeastern rhythm forró pé-de-serra. It’s a project in collaboration with Robson Póvoa. The group’s musical signature is to explore other rhythms from this part of Brazil such as frevo, ciranda and maracatu in their songs. Their debut album was nominated in the Best Folk Group category in the Brazilian Music Awards 2017 and reached European radios in 2019.
BIO
Percussionist, music producer and composer
Multi-instrumentalist and music producer Luccas Martins read popular percussion at the São Paulo State School of Music “EMESP Tom Jobim” (2005-2010) under the guidance of renowned Brazilian musicians Guello, Ari Colares and Lilian Carmona, among others. During this period, he had the chance to perform alongside celebrated exponents of Brazilian Popular Music “MPB” such as Sérgio Reis, as well as Brazilian folk musicians including guitarist Zé Barbeiro and bassist Rogério Botter Maio. He also performed alongside the Italian singer and percussionist Alessandra Belloni, voted the best percussionist in the world.
From 2008 to 2012, he attended the Licenciatura Plena Música in the Alcântara Machado College of Art, "FAAM". Since 2009, Luccas has been teaching percussion and currently works on several music projects, performing in concert and making studio recordings. He has also produced well-known musicians such as Toninho Carrasqueira, Toinho Melodia, and Arleno Farias.
In 2017, his band Serelepe was nominated in the category of “Best Regional Music Group” in the celebrated national music awards, “Prêmio da Música Brasileira”, for the album Forró por aí..., a recording steeped in the popular forró rhythms of the Northeast of Brazil.
Born in the rural city of Louveira in the State of São Paulo amidst grape vines, lush green plantations and blue skies, Luccas brings the freshness and light of the fruit circuit city to his compositions.
Luccas had a strong musical influence in his family from birth. His grandfather, known as “Seu Zico Martins” played the trombone for over 50 years in what is now the symphonic band of Louveira. As a teenager, Luccas had his first dab with an acoustic guitar and soon started learning the tambourine, a versatile and fascinating instrument, which opened the doors to the world of percussion where he now leads his life as a professional musician.
Experimentation and originality are Luccas’ trademarks, whether as a percussionist, researching and augmenting his collection with distinctive instruments including the handpan, a harmonic drum that evolved from caribbean steel drums, and the berimbau, a traditional instrument perhaps best known for providing the soundtrack to capoeira, the rhythmic Brazilian martial art; as a composer creating arrangements for groups ranging from symphonic orchestras to quartets, including the unconventional lineup of the Luccas Martins Trupe, with accordion, trumpet, vibraphone and percussion; or as a producer, using innovative recording and mixing techniques that give an authentic aesthetic to any project.
